It was close to ten when DJ got home that night, but he tried calling Brady anyway. Based on what DJ gleaned from social media, his friend kept late hours, either working or playing. But it didn’t surprise him when Brady didn’t answer. He tried again, but it went to voice mail after a couple rings. DJ massaged his temples as he hung up. This wasn’t something he could leave a message about.

His phone dinged with a text from Brady. Sorry. Had to come into work after church and can’t talk. What’s up?

I really need to have a conversation with you, DJ replied. Not something to talk about over a text message.

Brady didn’t respond right away, so DJ flicked on the TV. Twenty minutes later he got a reply text: I’ll try to get back to you tomorrow.

DJ sighed. With Brady, that was the best he could hope for. His friend’s possible reactions had darted in and out of his thoughts most of the night with Chelsea, especially when Brady had called after dinner. DJ had noted the surprise on Brady’s face when he’d caught sight of DJ. He’d given his friend a quick nod of greeting, but Chelsea had gathered up Austin and taken him into the family room so Austin could talk with his dad. From what he heard of the conversation from the kitchen, neither Chelsea nor Brady addressed the fact that DJ was there. Chelsea had returned to the table only a few minutes later.

“Toddlers have short attention spans,” she’d explained with a half-laugh. She and her mom shared a quick look of frustration. DJ wasn’t sure if the look expressed their frustration about Austin not sitting still or Brady not being more physically present.

Even though the call had added to his worries, he couldn’t regret the night or taking this step with Chelsea. Everything clicked into place with her, like a perfect pass or making the first truck to leave the station. It was difficult to give Brady’s feelings as much weight as he should—especially since he couldn’t get him to answer a phone call. Irritation rose in his thoughts. He’d considered Brady at every step with Chelsea, but Brady couldn’t take ten minutes to give him a call? Brady hadn’t called him in months, and the last time he did, their conversation had lasted less than five minutes. DJ had argued with himself for weeks over how this would hurt his best friend, but how much of a best friend was Brady these days?

Or was DJ justifying how much happier his life was with Chelsea in it?

He couldn’t tell anymore.

He went to bed and put Brady out of his thoughts, focusing instead on how great his future with Chelsea looked.
